We are calling on the UK government to phase out the breeding of big cats* in UK zoos.
First, the government should prohibit any future attempts to breed big cats in captivity, and stop the importation of additional big cats from the wild or from other zoos into the UK.
Next, the government should ban the use of big cats for visitor ‘experiences’ and work with zoos and other partners to introduce tougher, mandatory measures relating to enclosure size and design which prioritise animal welfare. The government must ensure big cats who cannot be relocated to legitimate sanctuaries, or released into semi-wild or wild environments, are given the best possible conditions for the rest of their lives.
Finally, focus must shift to implementing effective measures to protect wild big cats in their natural habitats as part of functioning ecosystems.
*Big cats: cheetahs, jaguars, leopards, lions, pumas, snow leopards and tigers
